Unless, there is a set topic in which case you could perhaps look at it from another angle so say if you're doing a topic on architecture and everyone is focusing on exteriors, focus on interiors.
I'm not sure what she means by the breathing and concentrating thing and writing about a theme you are passionate about or that means a lot to you should make it easier to actually produce the work itself. I used to draw out diagrams, a bit like word association ones, just write the theme in the centre and write the first things that come into your head around it, any places that you associate with that theme, any events, colours, shapes, forms, textures, emotions, etc. I think when she says it can't be random I think she probably means in terms of the 12 pieces relating to one another. As long as you can explain the relation, I don't see how there could be a problem. Hope that helps, good luck with your project.
